Art, music, and drinks: My three favorite things and they all come together at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News. The Arts Café happens every Thursday from 5:30-8:00 pm. Each week you get to hear different local musicians, enjoy a glass of wine or beer, and stroll around the gallery looking at the art. I have been three times now and love it. It provides my friends and me something cultural and different to do as a group. Last Thursday Colin Hogan, who is a singer, songwriter, and musician, played for the captivated audience. Bassist Brian Link accompanied her. Her music was refreshing and she displays a diverse musical repertoire. I recommend checking her out at Granby North Restaurant on April 1. Check out the rest of her schedule at www.FeistyFolk.com.
Unfortunately the current art exhibit, BLINK! Art of the speed of light, ends on March 26. However, if you get a spare moment this week or can attend this Thursday’s Arts Café then do so. The first exhibit features photography by Harold Edgerton (1903-1990) and is called Seeing the Unseen. These are some of the most extraordinary photographs you have probably ever seen. What makes his work so amazing to me is what he captures with the camera. You can see the instant a bullet cuts through a card, an athlete’s motion, the detonation of an atomic bomb, and the splatter of a drop of milk to name a few. The other exhibit contains three pieces of Kinetic Sculpture by Gregory Barsamian. Incredible! It is hard to describe, but the pieces spin in combination with a strobe light which results in animating the sculpture. My favorite of the three, The Scream, is a self portrait that turns inside out revealing the things that we can’t seem to get out of our mind. A must see! This Thursday, March 23 Narissa Bond will be the featured musician. Then on March 30 the Suzy Ray Vaughn Band plays. The next Art Exhibit is called BY HAND: Furniture, Ceramics, Fabric, and Basketry running April 8-May 28. Don’t forget you can also take art classes at the center. The classes are great and they offer a wide variety to choose from. I took painting last year and plan on taking pottery this summer.
