First off, let me say that I’m not a huge fan of the musical Godspell. Bearing that in mind, I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Kecoughtan High Schools's benefit performance of Godspell at Peninsula Community Theatre. The performances of the KHS students were phenomenal, and made this mediocre show a joy to watch.
I went to this performance on opening night. Director Carol-Sue Fiest volunteered her students to perform their show on PCT’s stage to raise money for PCT’s scholarship foundation, as well as to defray costs for a new defibrillator for the theatre. I was blown away at the quality of this “high school” performance. The minimalist set and lighting allow the students' performances to shine without much distraction. It also allowed actors to transition on the stage smoothly from one number to another, with small amounts of down-time in the process. In this way,
The acting and musical numbers just shined on the stage. From the beginning of the show, I was enchanted by the vibrancy and professionalism shown by each of the performers. Standout performances were given by CHRISTOPHER LEARY, DONNIE BROOKMAN, MEGAN BROWNING, and SARAH SCOTT. My heart particularly went out to Mr. Brookman due to him having a vocal ailment during the performance and still singing out. I was thoroughly enchanted with the musical numbers “Bless the Lord”—in which the female vocals were powerful and akin to a performance I would expect from a regular season PCT show, and “All For the Best”—which had the audience holding their breath and the actors sweating from the exertion. I must admit, I enjoyed Act I better than Act II—but I believe that this is due to the tempo of the music and the overall mood of the show. The ending of the show, however, was powerfully done, and even brought a tear to my eye. All in all, I give this performance a sparkling review. It was obvious that these students put a lot of time and effort into their performances, and created a show that was enjoyed by all who attended. There were no detractors from this performance, each artist added something to the ensemble, and made this a performance to remember. |

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Nice picture Sarah!! I have to agree with the reviewer on this one. I was definitely surprised at the quality of this show. Most of the high school shows I've seen were crap, and I went to this one with just a bit of dread. Happily, it was not at all what I expected. Carol Sue and her students get major props. |
