I found out this film was coming out and
realized that I had never seen the original Invasion
of The Body Snatchers from the 50’s starring Kevin McCarthy. Yes, that
dude had the exact same name as me. There was a remake of that film in 1978 starring
Donald Sutherland and then another in the early 90’s that had a bunch of
no-name actors. They finally got the
idea to do another remake and change the name around a little
bit. Let me say right now, that having seen the
original Invasion of the Body Snatchers and
now seeing The Invasion, I prefer the
original. The Plot: Just to give a quick synopsis of the film, it deals with an alien life form that has come to earth and spreads into human bodies. Once the life form is in your body and you go to sleep, you become that alien. You look, sound and act normal except that you have no emotions. You could get punched in the face and you would not get sad or start crying. One thing that I actually enjoyed about The Invasion over the original, was the explanation given as to where this alien life form came from. They gave a very brief explanation of it in the first film, but in the 2007 version, it is explained that the alien life form comes to earth via a space shuttle crash. No one knows why this space shuttle has crashed, but it has a brought with it, an extra terrestrial life form that spreads like the flu. Unlike the original, there are no pods that the alien version of the human beings grown in. In the original, once the human being falls asleep, all of their memories and life are transferred to this alien body which looks, sounds and acts just like the real person. The main difference is that this being now has no emotions and wants only one thing; to make everyone else around them, an alien life form. This time around, the alien life form is spread like the flu virus. People can catch it from kissing, coughing, etc. I actually thought that idea for spreading the life form was better than the original with the pods. The Review: Overall, the biggest problem with The Invasion was how fast the characters were able to come to conclusions regarding this alien attack on earth. The thing that made Invasion of the Body Snatchers so good was that it left you guessing, even after the movie was over. Back in the day, films did not all have conclusions and happy endings. The answers to the attack just came so easily to the characters in The Invasion. I heard people laughing in the audience because it was so unbelievable that Kidman’s, Wright’s and Craig’s characters were able to figure exactly what was going on. The story behind these films is seriously one creepy tale. One of the positives about The Invasion over the original was the acting with no emotions. One way you are able to tell if someone has been taken over by the alien life form is how they react to normal life. These beings have no emotions and pretty much sound like robots. Some of my favorite scenes were watching Kidman walking through D.C. trying to act like she was one of the alien life forms, so that she did not get captured. Another big problem with the film was the trailer. I really thought it gave too much away, especially in scenes that were meant to be intense. For example, there is a scene in the trailer when Kidman’s car is covered with bodies and she is asleep. Her son is trying frantically to wake her up. The intensity of that scene is whether or not Kidman will wake up in time to get her and her son out of there. Shocker, the trailer already shows her driving off, so that scene was completely ruined. The Verdict: You may be saying to yourself, "Ok, BDK is going all over place. He likes a lot of stuff here and doesn’t like a lot of stuff at the same time." Well, that is how I feel. The movie threw me around a lot. One minute I really liked what I was watching and the next minute it just seemed absolutely ridiculous. The movie does have a pretty intense 30-45 minute stretch where it is really edge of your seat action. I give the film 3 BDK’s because I feel it is the perfect rental. There is no need to see the film in theatres. Go out and rent the original from the 50’s before you see this one. |
