Samuel L. Jackson thought he would try another movie with the word snake in the title, to see if this one would actually make him money.  (We all know how poorly Snakes on a Plane did in the box office.)  I just got back from an early advanced screening (1-17-07) of Black Snake Moan and I have to tell you, it was pretty darn good.

Let me first say that when I  saw the trailers for this film, I did not think it looked that great.  I really thought all the jokes in the trailer were just cheap laughs and the movie was just going to be garbage.  I do stand corrected (a little bit).  I was right about the cheap laughs, but they did have me cracking up throughout the entire movie.

ImageOk, let me start by saying that this is one of my favorite musicals.  It is an incredibly funny self-mocking musical filled with spoof and satire. By the name, one might think we are about to be sit through an extended night of bathroom style one liners like “Big Yellow River” by I. P. Freely, but we are actually treated to an evening full of comedy that is both intelligent and fresh (plus bad bathroom jokes).

Joel Schumacher has been around for years directing such classics as The Lost Boys (silly movie if you have not seen it), The Client and other great films like Phone Booth. He has also made some pretty crappy movies; i.e. Batman and Robin. Overall though, he is a very decent director and one of the few big names that people will still go to theatres to check out these days.

I attended a screening of The Astronaut Farmer earlier in the month where Billy Bob Thornton and the Polish brothers (Michael and Mark) were in attendance. The flick tells the story about an actual farmer, whose name happens to be Charles Farmer, who plans to build and launch a rocket into space. Billy Bob Thornton and the writer, Mark Polish, and director, Michael Polish, introduced the film to a sold-out crowd.

I want to take a second and say that I was not bored during one minute of this film. It really does keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Considering it is a true story and the outcome is already known, they did a really good job of making you feel on edge the entire film.

When I was kid, I used to collect comic books and Ghost Rider happened to be the majority of the ones that I collected. I was one of those kids who would just buy the comics for the images and not read any of the text. I just loved the visuals of the Ghost Rider comics. They used to actually scare me a little. When I first saw the movie trailer for this flick, I thought it looked amazing.

ImageOscar Wilde was a man of words, wit and wonderment. Wilde was WILD. The Importance of Being Earnest is a play that has always been near and dear to my heart. It is very possibly Oscar Wilde’s most brilliant play, which is saying a lot since he is considered to be amongst Europe's best and brightest playwrights.

ImageI asked if any friends wanted to go with me to see a play about the Black Plague.
"Is it like Holy Grail? Bring out your dead?"
"Oh lord, this is going to be like Philadelphia or something, isn't it?"
Fortunately, neither was the case. The Little Theater of Virginia Beach has put together what I would say is one of the strongest shows of this season. The Living, though not quite what they advertise, is worthy of not only public attendance, but school field trips.

Isaac Asimov, Where Are You? | Print |  E-mail

ImageIn 1950, Isaac Asimov wrote a collection of short stories entitled "I, Robot." In this collection were several tales of robots (advanced technology) and their relationship to mankind. And in order for them to peacefully co-exist, Asimov wrote that the robots/machinery had to be governed by the three laws of robotics. These laws basically stated that a human being could not be harmed, either by action or inaction.

ImageOnce more the area has been graced with a production that's out on the road in one of those infamous truck and bus tours. These road shows can be everything from outstanding to just plain bad. Life on the road as an actor isn't all glamour. The number of performances is usually pretty demanding, and depending on the tour venues (A, B, or C types) your backstage area can be quite... interesting. And living out of a suitcase is never easy.

ImageThis past weekend I had the pleasure of seeing Free Reign Theatre's production of Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim at the George M. and Linda H. Kaufman Theatre in the Chrysler Museum. This musical - amongst one of my top favorites - always poses a challenge for community based groups. This case is no different. Into the Woods also nicknamed "Into the Words" by Forbidden Broadway in New York brings many challenges to groups.

Great Photography Equals a Great Exhibit | Print |  E-mail
Written by Amber Jordan-Baloy
Tuesday, 05 December 2006
ImageI embarked upon my visit to the Chrysler Museum of Art with a keen sense of anticipation. I was attending their weekly “Art of Jazz” series which occurs on Wednesday nights. In reality I was there to view their newest exhibit, “A Century of Great Photography from the Virginian-Pilot,” but the lure of visiting an art museum with music softly playing in the background and a glass of wine in hand was the deciding factor for the date of my visit. While the photography exhibit turned out to be much more than I expected, the “Art of Jazz” evening, sadly, fell far short of those expectations.
