Gentlemen, this article is not for you. Ladies, if you're the easily shockable kind, this article isn't for you either. Everyone else, read on!Last weekend, I had the best workout of my life. Not the most hardcore, or the most productive, or the most sweat-inducing... but definitely the best. But this was no normal aerobics class with some annoyingly peppy bimbo calling out kicks. No way. This, my dearies, was a stripper workout. At 6pm on a Saturday, I hauled my overly-endowed buns to Studio Rio in Virginia Beach... It was kind of a girls night out thing to help a friend take her mind of her man trouble. As we were driving over, I was thinking something like "Ok, it's only two hours, how bad can it be? She needs to do some weird off-the-wall thing right now to prove that she doesn't need Stupid Boy. Be a friend, bite the bullet, suck it up." Admit it ladies, we've all been there. Apparently she had signed us up for the two-hour introductory class. You know, the one where they give you sort of an overview of the various classes you can take. Only it wasn't a sampling of pilates, step aerobics, and yoga... it was pole dancing, lap dancing, hip thrusting, and "stripper walking". And this workout kicked my butt. Who knew? Who knew that learning to walk with a sexy attitude could really work out your abs and glutes? Who knew that learning a couple of pole tricks could work your biceps, triceps, back, and shoulders? And a simple hips rotation could absolutely kill my thighs, butt, and abs?
The first order of business was to share our stripper names. Naturally, a stripper wouldn't be called a normal name like Mary or Beth, or Mary Beth for that matter. I chose Mia for no particular reason. Aside from how strenuous the workout actually was, what surprised me most was the general feeling of comaraderie and support. Everyone cheered each other on, giggled together like school girls, and shared girl troubles like we'd known each other for years. It was the most amazing experience, especially when compared to all the other exercise classes I've ever taken. In those, there's usually just a lot of grunting and groaning and very little eye contact at all. Studio Rio offers a variety of classes, including a beginner series and various "specialty" classes.
Here's the contact info... Studio Rio is located at 3707 Virginia Beach Blvd #101 in VA Beach. I'll see you there, 'cause I am so signing up!

The very first night I left from class I walked out excited, and just wanted to continue with class everynight. The whole evening was one surprise after another, as I came to the realization that I was getting a complete workout without wanting to murder my trainer.
Rio and Nina lead the class of approximately 15 ladies of all shapes, sizes, and ages. The youngest girls were about 20 (babies) and the oldest I would estimate to be about 50 (ladies never ask ages). The skinny little 20-year olds (you know, the kind you love to hate) were dance students and picked all the moves up right off the bat. But also in the class were a few ladies who'd probably never been on a dance floor in their lives - the shy, silent types, a couple of soccer moms, a young grandmother or two, and two of the most graceful over-200 pound women I've ever seen. Those girls had some serious moves on them and didn't let their weight make them self-conscious at all. All in all, a pretty amazing and diverse group of women.
