correct posture exercise
A bunch of changes have occurred in the past few months and I'll bet people are getting a mite confused. From login problems to article organization, things have gotten a little crazy around here.
Login Problems:
We'll hit the most important one first. We've gotten lots of complaints lately that people are having trouble logging in so that they can post comments. After much troubleshooting, discussion and headaches... after weeding through code, overturning rocks, and banging our heads against the wall... we finally found... nothing. There's no problem on our end. However, those crafty people who work with Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Mozilla (among others) have all put out updates recently and we think that might be the problem. So if you're one of the people having trouble, we have two things for you to try:
1. Fix Your Cookies. You've probably heard the term before but in case you haven't, these are the things that make your computer remember that you've logged into a site. If your computer can't accept cookies, it will forget you've logged in as soon as you hit the "Log In" button. Fortunately this is easy to fix.
- If you use Internet Explorer, go to "Tools" at the top right of your browser window (location may depend on what version you're using). Select "Internet Options" from the dropdown menu. Select the "Privacy" tab. Hit the "Advanced" button. Mark the checkbox labeled "Override automatic cookie handling". Select both radio buttons labeled "Prompt". This makes the computer ask you if you want to allow cookies from a site instead of just doing it without permission. Mark the checkbox labeled "Always allow session cookies". This will allow you to stay logged in to a site even when going from page to page within that site. When you go to log in to OnHamptonRoads.com, you should get a popup window asking your permission to accept cookies from us. Please do, or else you went through all of that for nothing.
- If you use Netscape or Mozilla go to "Tools" in the bar at the top of your browser window. Click "Options on the dropdown list. Click the "Privacy" tab. Make sure the box that says "Accept Cookies" is checked. If you do not want to accept cookies from every site in the world, UNcheck the box, then click "Exceptions" and type in "www.onhamptonroads.com". This will allow you to accept cookies from onhamptonroads.com, but no other site.
2. Reset Password. If your browser is already accepting cookies or if that doesn't fix your login problem, send us as email at response@onhamptonroads.com with "Login Problems" in the subject line. In the email, let us know your Username for the site. We'll send you an email with a new password. When this new password works (crossing fingers), make sure you change your password to something you'll remember by going to "Your Details" in the User Menu. This sounds kind of convoluted I know, but sometimes resetting a password is all it takes.
New Article Organization:
As I'm sure you've already noticed, we have a new way of organizing our articles on the main page. The old way of putting stuff up there just wasn't working out. Plus, we noticed that a lot of people just come to check out articles about a certain category, like theatre, and then left. So hopefully the new tab system will make it easier and quicker for you to find the things you're interested in.
No New Articles:
Yes, we know. We haven't had any new articles for quite sometime now. All the action has been happening in the Reviews section. Well, obviously there's been a lot of reorganizing going on - all in efforts to make this site better. Unfortunately, somethings had to fall by the wayside in order to get other things done, and the Articles section was one of them. However, we've striven to keep the Reviews a'coming, so hopefully you're not too disappointed with us. (Plus, we've now cleverly disguised the fact that our last new Article was written in December. With the new organization of the front page, you'll get distracted by all the marvelous Reviews and never even notice there aren't many Articles hanging around.)
Movie Reviews:
We've finally added the much-requested Movie Reviews! As you know, we're all about covering "what's happening in Hampton Roads", and though movies certainly aren't exclusive to our area, they are most definitely "happening" here. We've teamed up with a former Newport News resident (he's in DC now) who's already been doing movie reviews for some time now. Go visit his home website and find out more about him on his Bio Page. Forum Gone: We have decided to remove the forum from onHamptonRoads.com for a number of reasons.
- Too much flaming occurred
- (ergo) People stopped using the forums
- We wanted to put more emphasis on the articles themselves
- We had to battle too many spam-bots trying to advertise for other sites (even porn)
Always Need More Writers: Right now we really need writers with strengths in any of the categories we normally write about. Specifically we are also looking to start two new sections: nightlife (bands/clubs/bars...) and dance. If you are knowledgeable in either of those areas, we would love to hear from you.
