The OHR Awards are here! | Print |  E-mail

ImageWe hear your demands and we deliver. Especially when you’re asking for something as great for the arts as reinstating local theatre awards. Or as tasty as a big order of Chinese food… you could ask for that too.

After much deliberation this summer, we have decided on the fairest method of decision-making that we could think of. In something as subjective as the arts, it’s impossible to be in 100% agreement with all concerned, but we hope we’ve come pretty close. You can take a look at the official OHR Awards Procedures yourself, but I’ll try to sum it all up for you in a way that’s easier to understand. A pox on all that lawyer-speak!

Basically what happens is this:

  1. We send a reviewer to a show.
  2. If something in that show is really great, the reviewer fills out a recommendation form.
  3. At least two members of the Awards Judicial Committee attend the show.
  4. They score the element of the show that was recommended by the reviewer.
  5. At the end of the season, all the scores from all the suggested elements are evaluated.
  6. The top five in each category will be announced as “nominees” at the OHR Awards Ceremony at the end of the season.
  7. The one with the top score will be announced as the winner at the ceremony.

Then there are the extenuating circumstances and caveats:

  1. If we can’t get a reviewer to the show who is unbiased (i.e. has some sort of connection to the show), we’ll send at least two members of the Judicial Committee to the show to score ALL elements of the show.
  2. The only theatre groups eligible for an award are those who term themselves “amateur” or "non-professional" in their bylaws. This means no semi-professional, professional, or educational groups.
  3. Only shows that have at least a two-week run will be eligible. Otherwise, we won’t be able to get committee members there before the thing closes.

PLUS, we have one extra feature! OHR will also be giving out our Special Awards. These are to-be-determined awards that will honor the really special stuff that goes on during a season. These awards could include Best Season, Best Directorial Concept, Greatest Contribution to the Arts, Best Pit Orchestra, etc.

Plans for the future…

As you all know, we’re still a fairly new site, so our plans for this year are what we believe we can actually accomplish this year. In the future we hope to:

  1. Include separate categories for the groups that are currently left out – semi-pro, pro, and educational.
  2. Include the preceding summer’s shows in the season. For example, the shows in Summer 2007 will be included in the 2007-8 Season.
  3. Increase the number of committee member that go to the show. This would provide a bigger (and therefore, even fairer) scoring base to evaluate.

The rules for this season will have to remain as they are, since the season has already started, but we’ll be evaluating the process all year to see if there’s a way to improve it. We welcome your suggestions. You can email us privately. The ceremony will be in July, so we’ll put up info about getting tickets sometime in the spring. See you there!

Just surfing old articles, such as this one. Are you still gonna do an awards thing, or has the idea been shredded?--See ya, HM

Nancy,
This year's season started with the opening of the fall shows. Next year, we'll start with the summer shows. We spent the summer arguing about how to do this right, so we just got rolling too late to include the summer shows this year.

Yes, we would love to hear what the public has to think about the year in theatre. Hopefully the forums will be replete with opinions on who should be voted best ____. Because of the way that we are doing the judging, it shouldn't have any effect on the recommendation/nomination/judging process, however, it will have a huge impact on the Special Awards that we will be giving out.

GLORIOUS

It's about time. And thank you for not opening up the Pandora's Box method of selection by popular vote (and the resultant mass e-mails!)

However, would still like to hear what people think.

One question: Does your season start with this summer's shows, or the first 'fall show?'

Toodles.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on this monumental achievement in a relatively short time. It's hard, I know: no matter what you do, and as fair as one tries to be, that there will be naysayers--and worse! When I first suggested this award thing, never thought it would actually happen. Carpe Diem!--Joe S
