The Pillowman
September 21st - October 13th
The 40th Street Stage
Called “A spellbinding stunner of a play” by The
New
York Times, this black comedy postmodern fairytale was at the top of our “must do” list of
plays. Produced
and presented by Source
Theatre (Art and Two Rooms).
Winner of the Olivier Award in London for best play, this play
is
thrilling-
disturbing- wildly funny in oh so wickedly ways. Two brothers have been brought
in
for questioning about a series of
brutal murders – murders that bear an uncanny resemblance
to stories that one of the brothers has written. ‘The
Pillowman’ is one of those stories, about
a soft pink ‘pillowman’ whose work it is to visit the
bedrooms of children who are fated (The pillowman can
see the future) to be abused and hurt – and convince them
that’s its better that they kill themselves now. It is not
recommended
for younger viewers, as it deals with torture, mutilation and the ritualistic
murders of children.
And for all that, it is as fine a piece of storytelling and
pure theatre as anything you’ll see this season.

Pulitzer Prize wining masterpiece is savage, beautiful and hypnotic.
