Jazz, Soul, and Oldies

George Benson – October 13
Jazz guitarist George Benson has won eight Grammy awards and has done a duet with Aretha Franklin. Today’s reality TV viewers will know him as that guy who sang “On Broadway” with Nikko Smith and Scott Savol on last year’s American Idol season finale. He has an international fan base, and has won critical acclaim for his versatility and execution. Look forward to a seductive evening of soul, rhythm and blues.

Bo Diddley & Friends – November 9
"And friends" includes guest artists such as guitarist Alvin Youngblood Hart and vocalist Ruthie Foster. Bo Diddley is probably one of the most influential rhythm ‘n’ blues guitarist ever. He put his stamp on rhythm 'n' blues, rock 'n' roll, and pop with innovative rhythm, custom-built guitars, unique sound, and a trademark stage show.

Brian Setzer Orchestra’s 5th Annual Christmas Extravaganza – December 4
These are the guys who are almost solely responsible for bringing back swing music and making it cool again. They paved the way for groups like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Cherry Poppin' Daddies to be able to make a living. Brian Setzer Orchestra’s biggest hit is still probably “Jump Jive An’ Wail”. I seriously hope there’s a dance floor set up for this one, because having to stay calm and seated for these guys would just be torture.

Glenn Miller Orchestra – December 16
Long before Brian Setzer, there was Glenn Miller. In my opinion, the best big band ever, and certainly one of the most popular. If you hear a recording of “In the Mood” or “Pennsylvania 6-5000”, it’s probably them. My daddy taught me to dance to this record. (Yeah, record. Remember those?) Today, the 19-member band still plays original Miller arrangements, plus modern selections in the big-band style.

ImageTormé Sings Tormé featuring Steve March Tormé – February 13
OK, so how many times can the name “Tormé” be put in one sentance? Steve presents a special tribute to Mel, his father. He is accompanied by a classic big band performing original arrangements, as well as those composed by Mel Tormé.

10th Annual Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival – April 18-21
A great chance to get together for some excellent jazz. I don’t know the line up for this year yet (it'll be announced in January), but last year’s performances included Kurt Ellington, the CNU Jazz Ensembles, and the Count Basie Orchestra, among lots of others. Will brandy snifters be provided? Can’t have jazz without brandy, after all.
