Comedy and Speakers
Capitol Steps – October 12
The Capitol Steps
began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very
people and places that employed them. Since we can all find things to
laugh at about our politicians, I’m going to guess that this is going
to be a pretty darn funny show. Not all of the current members of the
Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, but taken together, the
performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and
represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.
Whoopi Goldberg – January 12
Her
resume includes names like “Academy Award”, “Daytime Emmy Award”,
“Golden Globe”, “Tony”, “BAFTA” and “Grammy”. Her stage name was taken
from 'whoopie cushion', which she initially wanted as her name, but
chose the last name of Goldberg after her mother pointed out that her
initial name pick would not look dignified enough to take seriously.
She's probably the only Oscar winner to have once beens a single mother
on welfare. This show contains adult language.
Clay Jenkinson as Thomas Jefferson – January 25
Clay Jenkinson
adopts the persona of Jefferson to comment on current events and answer
questions you may have about Jefferson's thoughts on any and all
topics. He’s even won a couple of awards for his humanities-based first
person interpretation methodology, and is the host of NPR's "The Thomas
Jefferson Hour".
James McPherson and David Hackett Fischer - Jamestown: A Pivotal Moment in American History – March 29
A
lecture? A speech? A history lesson? Well, sort of. Both of these men
are historical authors and university professors, Fischer has won a
Pulitzer Prize. In this, they'll explore how Jamestown represented a
pivotal moment in America's past, and how it changed the course of
global history.
