Rock and Doowop
Chicago – September 18
The rock band, not the musical theatre show – I was a bit confused,
too, at first. I think they’re the band that the term “rock ballad” was
coined for in the first place.
Everyone knows at least a couple of their hits, "You're The
Inspiration", "Hard Habit To Break", and "Next Time I Fall In Love"
being probably the most popular.
The Four Tops – November 10
After 50 years, they still hold their own with all ages, genders, and classes. The Four Tops’ biggest hits include “Baby I Need Your Loving”, “Walk Away Renee”, and “MacArthur Park”.
Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons – November 16
When I think of doowop, this is the group that always comes to mind.
And then I think, “how the heck did that guy sing so darn high?” These
guys sold over a 100 million records during their career, making them
the most long lived and successful white doowop group.
An Evening with Cornell Gunter's COASTERS, Elsbeary Hobbs' DRIFTERS & THE PLATTERS – February 23
What's
up with the one-word names? You know their music, even if you can’t
keep their names straight. The Coasters are the funny guys - "Yakety
Yak", "Poison Ivy", and "Charley Brown", The Drifters are the “Under
the Boardwalk” and “On Broadway” guys, and the Platters are the “Earth
Angel” and “Only You” guys. I wonder if there’ll be a dance floor set
up…
The Beach Boys – May 12
What in the world do I say about The Beach Boys
except “their still touring?” The greatest herald of summer to me is
when the radio stations start playing “Kokomo”. Almost makes me want to
strip down to my bathing suit and hit the surf with all the little
teeny boppers at the beach. Almost.
