Dance ~ Other
Classical Savion starring Savion Glover – January 20-21
Who?
Oh yeah! That’s the guy that made tap cool again. You’ve probably seen
clips of him doing his funky thing, but maybe you could never remember
his name. When he was 12 years old, he made his Broadway debut as the
title character in The Tap Dance Kid, then got a Tony Award for Best Choreography for Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk.
If there was a thought that being able to dance, especially tap,
somehow made you “less cool”, this guy so proves that wrong. In this
performance, he shares the stage with 15 musicians to lend his unique
style to Vivaldi and Bach, among others.
Hungarian State Folk Ensemble – March 31
The
choreographies are all based on authentic dances, some of them were
collected in isolated villages with dance elements dating back hundreds
of years. If you’re interested in traditional culture, dance, and
costume, this is a great show for you. Performed on authentic,
traditional instruments, this is a rare opportuniy to experience
Hungarian Folk music at its highest artistic level.
Golden Dragon Acrobats – April 27
Part
of Ferguson's Family Series... it’s like a big circus! In China,
acrobats are revered much the same way prima ballerinas and opera
singers are in the West. And since I’d get a hernia trying any of the
things they can do, I can understand why. I’ve seen excerpts from their
performances, and my jaw starts to put down roots where it’s lying on
the floor.
Riverdance – May 25-27
Of course you already know Riverdance,
Michael Flatley, and all that. It got the rest of the world interested
in Irish step dance, something that most of us uncultured Americans had
never heard of before then. Fortunately, since that style of dance has
a limited vocabulary – rigid arms, a stiff upper-body, and lots of
footwork – the show also includes forays into other styles like Spanish
flamenco and American tap dance.
