I arrived at 6:45 to find Willie McGhee, Master Electrician for the 40th St Stage, curled up on the sofa in the hallway deep in slumber. In the theater itself, Sharri Reid, Stage Manager, is talking to Mim Aylox about being the board op for City Arts' first theatrical production, Craig Lucas’ Reckless. It seems they had to replace someone who is no longer available. I wait a moment for the ladies to finish swapping numbers and emails so I can check in with Sharri. My mission: write a preview article of Jeff Corriveau’s latest show. They are less than a week away.

With all the technical aspects of stagework to learn and all people that one needs to network with, where is an actor who is new to the craft or new to the area to go? Peninsula Community Theatre wants to answer that question with Theatre Talk, a series of courses offered to interested theater folk over Saturday morning coffee and donuts. |

After dealing with writers' scheduling issues, puncturing a
tire on the way to Southside, gouging a hole in the pavement while
changing said tire, and then finding the spare was half flat, I was
definitely ready to beat the crap out of someone. I didn't get to, of
course, but fortunately the Dominion Derby Girls took care of that for me.

We hear your demands and we deliver. Especially when you’re asking for something as great for the arts as reinstating local theatre awards. Or as tasty as a big order of Chinese food… you could ask for that too.

I’m impressed and excited about the upcoming season at the Ferguson Center for the Arts.
They’re continuing to bring in a pretty eclectic selection of artists,
hoping to get all sorts of different people through their brightly-lit
arches. Some of these events, I’m sure will be instant sellouts.

Newcomers to
the Tidewater area (and with the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and
Coasties comings and goings we have tons of them) see Hampton Roads as
just another strip mall sprawl. So, if a newbie came up to you (without
making you want to send them for a long walk off a short Ocean View
pier) and asked, "Where do YOU go when you want to see a good Country
band and have a couple of cold ones" where WOULD you tell them to
go...uh...once they figured out you were just kidding about "Hell"?

With all of the recent traffic on the site over the doings at the Generic, I was asked to ask around and see what the story was. As someone who has performed and seen shows in that space, I was aware of the rumors that the Generic might be at the end of its run. |

Can you name the Tidewater amateur theater group that has been active for almost 70 years (if not more) and is one of the oldest in the state of Virginia? Aww. You cheated and read the title. |

Robert Ruffin grew up in rural Virginia with a love for theatre burning in his heart. While attending school, he found that the outlets for his love were few and far between. In pursuit of his art, he traveled to the big city, creating small shows that ran in small production houses in NYC. Eventually, though, Robert began to miss the people and lifestyle of his home...Virginia. So he returned with a mission: To bring a professional company to South-Eastern Virginia and spread the love of theatre to others like himself by traveling to rural areas with his original and unique shows.

Dieting is hard and everyone knows it. Eating healthily can get really expensive and can often be tasteless and unsatisfying. When eating out, simply saying “it’s a special occasion” can be all the excuse needed to completely splurge and order every deep-fried, fatty thing on the menu. While enjoyable at the time, this will inevitably lead to the guilty depression that plagues most dieters throughout two-thirds of their weight loss program. But restaurant dining doesn’t have to be guilty pleasure anymore. Follow these easy tips for a guilt-free night out.

Alas, my fair peoples, I have not been able to impart my wisdom for some time now. My calling beckoned me away to a Mistress of Knowledge convention in Saskatchewan, or some other improbably named place. However, having been in-serviced with even more wisdom to spread amongst you all, I now feel all the more empowered to tackle the complex throes of dating dilemmas.

MTI just amazes me when it comes to their programs for getting children involved in the arts. First, they have their wonderful Broadway, Jr. series. This series takes full-size musicals and alters them a bit to make them do-able for middle school groups. A few of these shows are performed annually by middle schools in our area. Then there’s their Kids Collection, which are shows specifically designed for K – 6th graders. School Editions takes full shows and gears them for performance by high schools. The Disney Collection does the Disney brand of family shows. And the TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences) Collection is shows to be performed by adults for children. I don’t know of another publishing company that does nearly so much for bringing kids to the arts. And now they’ve done more...

I know this is just a tad out of our local area, but I’m hoping that our arts patrons are a little like me and go up to New York City to catch some shows whenever time and money allow. It’s just that this show was something I had to tell as many people about as possible.
I first learned about Spamalot when a friend of mine (who works for Spamalot’s production company) let me hear some of the demo track for the show. I immediately *knew* that this was probably going to be the worst show ever. And that is why I will never be a producer.

As a Mistress of Knowledge here in Hampton Roads, it has come to my attention how miserable most men are at planning a decent date. I have learned this purely from observation, because of course my dates are always wonderful and romantic and embodied perfection. I am certainly not speaking from personal experience. However, I have conferred with some of my co-Mistresses of Knowledge throughout the state, and we have found that this is not merely a problem in this area, but all across the land. So I, Mistress of Knowledge, Hampton Roads Chapter 239, have decided to compile a guide for those poor souls who cower in the face of non-chatroom dating.
